Glossary
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Rating condition | The ambient and water temperatures at which a datasheet value was measured |
| Dry-bulb (DB) / Wet-bulb (WB) | Air temperature / temperature that also reflects humidity |
| COP | Heat delivered divided by electrical input |
| Derating | Reducing rated capacity to actual capacity at site conditions |
| Design ambient | The low outdoor temperature the system is designed to work at |
| Defrost | Melting ice off the outdoor coil, which briefly stops heating |
| Operating envelope | Map of allowed ambient vs leaving water temperatures |
| LWT | Leaving water temperature from the heat pump |
| EVI | Enhanced vapour injection, a compressor feature for cold climates and high water temperatures |
| Stratification | Hot water layer on top of cold in a still tank |
| Thermocline | The mixing zone between hot and cold layers |
| Usable fraction | Share of tank volume delivered at useful temperature |
| Direct heating | User water flows through the heat pump condenser |
| Indirect heating | A closed loop heats user water through a heat exchanger |
| PHE | Plate heat exchanger |
| Approach | Temperature difference between the two fluids at the exchanger end |
| Buffer tank | Extra water volume that prevents short cycling and separates circuits |
| Short cycling | Frequent stops and starts that wear the compressor |
| Hydraulic separator / low-loss header | Device that lets primary and secondary flows run independently |
| Cascade | Several units staged on one header |
| N+1 | One more unit than needed, for redundancy |
| TDS | Total dissolved solids in water, mg/L |
| Hardness | Calcium and magnesium content, as mg/L CaCO₃ |
| CIP | Clean-in-place connections for descaling |
| LRA | Locked rotor amps, the momentary starting current |
| DOL | Direct-on-line motor starting |
| RCCB | Residual current circuit breaker for earth leakage protection |
| P&ID | Piping and instrumentation diagram |
| TT / PT / FT / FS | Temperature transmitter / pressure transmitter / flow transmitter / flow switch |
