Fourteen years designing and building heat pumps in Maharashtra, and five thousand of them now running across the country. We draw them, build them, test them and stand behind them — so the answer on sizing comes from the people who made the machine.

Heat pump range

Every Sunniva machine does the same thing — moves heat instead of burning something to make it — and what separates them is how hot they will take the water, and how much of it. So start with the temperature, then read down.

Working principle

A heat pump moves heat instead of making it. That single difference is why it returns three to four units of heat for one unit of electricity, which nothing that burns or glows can do. The picture first; the four components underneath, for anyone who wants them.

Evaporator

Ambient air — even cold air — boils the refrigerant and gives up its heat.

Compressor

The vapour is compressed, which raises its temperature well above the water you want to heat.

Condenser

The hot vapour gives that heat to your water and condenses back to a liquid.

Expansion valve

Pressure drops, the liquid cools below ambient, and the cycle starts again.

Energy savings

A heat pump moves heat rather than making it, so it delivers three to four units of heat for one unit of electricity. Against a geyser or a diesel boiler that is where the running cost collapses.

Sustainable

No flue, no combustion, no fuel on site. Lower emissions than anything that burns, and lower still behind a rooftop solar array.

Low maintenance, long life

No burner to service, no flue to clean, no fuel to handle. Fewer moving parts than a boiler and a working life measured in decades.

You are buying hot water, not a heat pump. We take the job from the first site visit to the annual service, and stay the single accountable party the whole way.

Made in India is a supply chain here, not a sticker. Our own design team draws the machine and our own line at Asangaon builds it — including the ceramic-lined storage vessels. That control is why a non-standard duty is a conversation rather than a refusal, and why six days is a lead time we can actually offer.

Built to a sequence,
not to a deadline

A heat pump is a sealed refrigeration circuit, and almost everything that shortens its life is decided during the build — moisture left in the circuit, oxide scale from an unpurged braze, a charge that was guessed. None of it shows on day one. All of it shows in year three. So the line at Asangaon works to a fixed sequence, and nothing moves to the next bench until the last one is signed off.

Goods in

A machine cannot be better than what arrives on the bench.

  • Compressor, heat exchanger, coil and controls booked in against the maker’s own test report — no report, no line
  • Refrigerant and oil kept sealed and dated; a part-used cylinder does not go back on the shelf
  • Copper stored capped, so the bore is still clean and dry when it is cut

Cabinet

The only part of the machine the weather can reach.

  • Sheet cut and formed first, powder coated after — so no cut edge is left bare to start rusting
  • SS 304 instead where the site is coastal, wash-down, food or pharma
  • Anti-vibration mounts under the compressor before a single pipe is run to it
  • Drain path and service access set out before the panels go on

Pipework and brazing

Where a refrigeration circuit is won or lost, and the one stage nobody can inspect afterwards.

  • Every cut deburred and blown clear before it is joined
  • Dry nitrogen flowing through the joint while brazing, so no oxide scale forms inside the circuit to travel to the expansion valve
  • Filter drier fitted last, with the circuit open for the shortest time possible

Proving the circuit

Pressure, then vacuum, then weight — in that order, every time.

  • Pressure-tested with dry nitrogen and held on a gauge, not glanced at
  • Every joint leak-checked before the gas goes anywhere near it
  • Evacuated below 500 microns and held with the pump valved off — that is what proves the circuit is dry, not merely empty
  • Refrigerant weighed in to the design charge. Never topped up by sight glass

Electrical

Earthed, insulated and sized to the nameplate.

  • Continuity and earth bond proved on every unit
  • Insulation resistance measured before the machine is first energised
  • Contactor, MCB and cable matched to the nameplate current — not to what happened to be on the shelf
  • Ferrules and a wiring diagram that matches the machine in front of you, so a service engineer is not guessing

Run test

Every machine runs under load before it is allowed to leave, and every model is measured in our own laboratory before it is sold.

  • Run against a real water load, with suction and discharge pressure, superheat, subcool, running current and water in and out all logged
  • Safety chain proved by tripping it — high pressure, low pressure, flow switch
  • Sensors checked against a reference and the controller set to the order, not to the default
  • COP and capacity measured in our own test laboratory at controlled ambient, down to −25 °C — see below
  • Test record filed against the serial number, so a call in year three can be answered from the file

A heat pump is easy to rate on a mild day. What a buyer in Shimla, Manali or Leh actually needs to know is what the machine does when it is freezing, and that is a question you can only answer by putting the machine in a chamber and taking the ambient down. Ours reaches −25 °C — the stated operating limit of the EVI range — so the coldest condition we sell a machine at is one we can also measure it at, rather than one taken on trust from a compressor catalogue.

What leaves with the machine

A serial number, a nameplate that matches the machine, a wiring diagram of the unit in front of you, and the test record from its own run. That record is why a fault three years out is a phone call rather than an investigation — and why a six-day lead time is a promise we can keep, because a machine is never held back at dispatch to be finished.

People

Forty-seven people, most of them in Maharashtra. Two of them run the company and are easy to reach; the rest are the reason an order gets designed, built, delivered and serviced.
